COMPETENCE CENTRE OF INTERMODAL TRANSPORT AND LOGISTICS

Under the globalization the opportunities of any mode of transport to compete for larger extent of transporting services are limited. Response to these structural challenges should be searched in new types of organizing transport system, first of all, in closer and more effective co-operation of various modes of transport as well as transport research and business companies. The perception of the value added interaction of various structures encouraged the researches in Lithuania to institutionalize the innovative co-operation base where representatives of Academia, Government and Transport Industry could more actively and effectively improve the national transport system. Such innovative structure named VGTU Competence Center for Intermodal Transport and Logistics (CCITL) in Lithuania was created in 2007.

The activity of CCITL is based on the notion that transport system is one of the most important factors predetermining a success of our state and the rates of its consolidation in the European space as well as the progress of its economy and the living standard of the population. In order to maintain Lithuanian transport system vital efforts of scientists and experts of various spheres are permanently mustered up for its improving and extending. The main research and activity objectives of CCITL are orientated towards the strengthening of intermodality of Lithuanian transport system, emphasizing intermodality as of fundamental significance for developing competitive transport modes. Therefore CCITL task is to ensure fuller integration of the modes offering considerable potential transport capacity as links in an efficiently managed transport chain joining up all the individual services. The priority is placed on conceptual harmonization and interoperability between different modes and different implementation levels.
